There were 249.9 million registered domains, representing a YoY decline of 4%.
It is estimated that most of the decline is due to the decline in registrations of coronavirus related domains.
The .fr domain was one of the most successful domain extensions in 2022, reaching the 4 million registration mark.
The .xyz gTLD was one of the most registered new types of domains in 2022. This hints at a strong aftermarket, where these were scooped up for the ability to hold and be resold later.
The .com gTLD continued as the most registered in 2022, with 160.9 million new registrations.

Fastest Growing Domains all TLDs in 2022
The .foundation domain saw the most growth across all TLDs in 2022, with a 260% growth. The nearest TLD was .in, which grew 197%, followed by .social at 153%.
Price by Domain Length
When you compare the price of domains sold by the length, you can see that the sweet spot is clearly domains having between 8-10 characters. Domain value starts to build at 4 characters and starts to fall off significantly at 15 plus characters.
Although we can see a spike in average price when you look at 13-15 characters and then again at 19 characters. This is likely caused by a domain being keyword specific and valuable for those exact keywords.
Domain Sales in 2022
When we look at the top 10 public domain sales in 2022, they are mostly dominated by .com sales, which continue to outpace most other TLDs in value.
The domain call.com was the highest publicly recorded sale in 2022 at $1.6 million. Yachts.com sold for $660k to claim the second spot. The top six sold domains were .com, and the top non-.com was termin.de at $163,740.
The .com TLD is projected to account for 66.6% of the top-selling domains in 2023. The .de is projected at 13.8% and the .net at 5.7%.
The average price to purchase a .com domain increased when comparing 2020 vs 2022. The average price for a .com in 2020 was $2,223, while it was $2,466 in 2022. The median price decreased, however, from $332 in 2020 to $300 in 2022.
74% of all domain sales on Sedo.com were “Buy Now.” The average price is $2,146, and the median is $400 across all domain sales.
The top 10 public “make offer” sales saw the highest sale for stuff at $80,174 and the lowest sale in the top 10 for editing.com at $46,000.
Sales Data by gTLD and ccTLD
The top 10 public sales across all new gTLDs saw best.casino at number one with a $60k sell price. Following that, algo.xyz at $50k, wallet.one at $49k, and a.game at $40,888.
The top .co domain in public sales for 2022 was broadcast.co, which sold for $27,845. Following that, pagoda.co, which sold for $27,500, and law.co, which sold for $22,500.
The top .co.uk domain in public sales for 2022 was wardrobes.co.uk, which sold for $17,000. Following that, kolster.co.uk, which sold for $7,901, and doctoronline.co.uk, which sold for $7,500.
The top .de domain in public sales for 2022 was termin.de, which sold for $163,740. Following that, wv.de, which sold for $66,960, and krypto.de, which sold for $40,923.
The top .es domain in public sales for 2022 was aprende.es, which sold for $16,316. Following that, bank.es sold for $14,559, and myticket.es sold for $8,000.
The top .fr domain in public sales for 2022 was ev.fr, which sold for $125,448. Following that, astrologie.fr, which sold for $14,696, and sugardaddy.fr, which sold for $10,168.
The top .xyz domain in public sales for 2022 was algo.xyz, which sold for $50,000. Following that, pfp.xyz, which sold for $34,999, and seda.xyz, which sold for $24,965.
As you can see, shorter 3-4 character domains were scooped up when .xyz launched and are some of the first to be sold for a profit. We'll continue to see this proliferate in 2023 and extend into the 5-9 character length in 2024 and on.
The top public .ai domain sale in 2022 was for gene.ai, at $25,148. As AI technology grows, more .ai domains will sell for higher values.
The top .io domain sold publicly was mode mode.io, with a price tag of $50,000.
The .org TLD also saw some decent value, with the top domain proton.org fetching a price of $125k. In contrast, the highest .net only pulled down $45k, utn.net.
Sedo.com Domain Sales
Sedo.com is a top domain auction firm headquartered in the U.K. They offer numerous types of auctions enabling entrepreneurs to buy and sell from their domain portfolios. Here is the breakdown of domain sales by method on Sedo.com in 2022.
